Deux hymnes adolescents, deux pépites imparables : sur son album de 1999, The Fidelity Wars, Hefner avait fait très fort.

The hymn for the cigarettes, d’abord. Sa lente montée d’adrénaline (comme nicotine ?). Sa voix qui fait superbement rimer adolescence et élégance. Ses paroles parfaites (« How can she love me if she doesn't even love the cinema that I love », « Lucky Strikes reminds me of my friends out on the West Coast / Camel lights remind me of my ex-girlfriend at Christmas time / Malboro reds remind me of giving up in Berlin / B&H remind me of not giving up but giving in »).

The hymn for the alcohol, ensuite, lente ballade capiteuse aux paroles déchirantes (« I know whiskey is its drink / You never drank it with me / But now you drink it with him / I’m not good enough for whisky / Not good enough for you »). Cigarettes et alcool : en quelque sorte, une bande-son idéale pour fin de soirée.
